North Shore Unitarian Universalists extends its ministry into the wider community through support of the arts, community projects, and Katrina recovery.
Artist of the MonthOur lobby features the Artist of the Month where members of the greater north shore art community are invited to display their work. Hot Art in a Cool SpaceEach summer, North Shore UU hosts an art show, Hot Art in a Cool Space, for award winning artists. This well attended show takes advantage of our open sanctuary to display art in a harmonious setting. Social Concerns CommitteeThrough its Social Concerns Committee, North Shore UU engages in
various community projects.
The projects tend to be small and focused. The work of this committee is ongoing.
Katrina RecoveryNorth Shore UU works with Gulf Coast Volunteers for the Long Haul (Long Haul) on their service trips to the Gulf Coast. Long Haul, which is non-profit and all volunteer, organizes relief trips to the Gulf Coast for groups of up to 40 people, including both teens and adults from around the nation. The Rev. Mary Harrington with a group of enthusiastic volunteers first appeared a few weeks after Katrina when North Shore UU needed help desperately. From that initial experience, the Rev. Harrington formed Gulf Coast Volunteers for the Long Haul to enable volunteer groups to return to the Gulf Coast repeatedly over the "Long Haul". Members of North Shore UU serve on the Long Haul Board and coordinate activities locally between visits. Center for Ethical Living and Social Justice RenewalNorth Shore UU supports the New Orleans Rebirth Volunteer Center, hosted at First Church Unitarian Universalist (fuuno) through its membership in the Greater New Orleans Unitarian Universalist (GNOUU). The center contributes to the rebirth of Greater New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region through programs and services that promote social, racial, and economic Justice. The center hosts volunteers who come to New Orleans to contribute to the city's rebirth. |
